Linn Sondek LP12

  • Linn LP12 Turntable
  • Ittok LVII Tonearm
  • Linn K18 Cartridge
  • Linn Lingo Power Supply

Light, airy and dynamic. These three words characterise the sound of the LP12. Bass performance may not be its strongest suit, but for sweet, clear and detailed mid and high ranges, the LP12 is hard to beat in its price range. It is great for listening to vocals and operatic works. It does a good job of recreating the vast soundstage of large symphonic works, but the slight weakness at the bottom end does tend to show up a little. It is a light turntable, and needs to be well set up. Good stands and base are absolutely essential. Works great with Black Diamond Racing granite slabs. Someday, I will upgrade it to the Linn Ekos/Arkiv tonearm/cartridge combination.
The only other turntable I seriously auditioned was a VPI TNT Jr., which seemed to be a bit dark and heavy sounding, although there was an enticing warmth to the overall sound. On the whole, I preferred the Linn.
